Though James Hendry felt a sense of relief in knowing the cause of his son’s death, he also found the news “mind boggling.”

“To have a healthy 19-year-old kid get killed by a mosquito was incomprehensible to me,” he said. “They’ve been talking about West Nile for quite a while now, but it’s something that you never really focus on that much.

“How many times have you heard of someone dying and you just waved it off because it wasn’t someone you knew or it was someone who didn’t live in your area?” James Hendry asked. “Things tend to change when it hits home — when it happens to your child.”

He said no one really knows where Phillip contracted the virus. He was working at a Hattiesburg steel company when he became ill. Hendry said Phillip posted an entry to his Facebook account Dec. 8, 2009.

Misdiagnosis

“He said he was feeling bad,” Hendry said. “He went to the immediate care clinic in Hattiesburg a couple of times with complaints about diarrhea and stuff like that.”

Hendry said Phillip’s mother, Vonda Loper, took him to the clinic Dec. 15 after Phillip developed breathing problems. “The swine flu was going on at that time and the doctor at the immediate care clinic told her Phillip had double pneumonia and needed to go to the hospital.”

Phillip was examined at a Hattiesburg hospital and was later sent home with a “camu flu inhaler.” Hendry’s ex-wife called him three days later to inform him Phillip was unresponsive and they were on their way to the hospital.

“By the time I got there, Phillip was on a respirator,” Hendry said. “He couldn’t hear. His blood pressure was 110 over 10. I knew he was in bad shape.

A healthy nineteen year old. You would think that he could withstand almost anything. He probably barely noticed the mosquito bite. This is why it is so important to practice home mosquito control.

In answer to this question, I’ve put together a few suggestions for natural mosquito control repellants that can be made at home and tested for efficacy. I don’t think that there is one single answer to the age old battle against the mosquito. Everyone has different body chemistries, and what works best for one person, may not be suitable for another. I have one blessed friend who is never bitten by mosquitoes at all, but she can’t use self tanning lotions without emitting an awful smell. Go figure! Anyway, back to repelling mosquitoes. Eucalyptus, rosemary, catnip, garlic, and citronella are among the few things that mosquitoes do NOT like at all. The actual leaves of the eucalyptus can be boiled, strained and poured into a spritzer bottle to be sprayed on every couple of hours. If you don’t have access to an actual eucalyptus plant because one of your children decided to see if the eucalyptus plant could withstand being split into two pieces and survive (yes, this happened at my house and no, it didn’t survive), you can add eucalyptus essential oil to a carrier oil to be rubbed directly onto the skin to repel mosquitoes.

Other natural mosquito control

The other herbs can be utilized in the same manner to repel mosquitoes, by either boiling fresh leaves to be sprayed, or adding essential oils, 3 drops, to a half cup carrier oil to be rubbed on. The ratio is generally a half of cup of fresh herbs to a quart of water for the boiling and straining method. All of these remedies help us on our way toward natural mosquito control.
